From Tuesday, 16 June 2020, students who are in particularly acute need and directly dependent on financial aid as a result of the corona pandemic can apply for interim financial aid from their Studierendenwerk. The grant of up to 500 euros does not have to be repaid.
Eligible to apply are students from Germany and abroad who are enrolled at state and state-recognized universities in Germany. The number of semesters or age are not grounds for exclusion. The decisive factor is the proven, acute emergency caused by the pandemic.
Not eligible to apply are students at universities of administration or Bundeswehr universities, students in part-time studies or dual studies, guest students and students at universities not recognized by the state.
Up to 500 euros for June, July and August
Depending on the proven need, between 100 euros and 500 euros can be paid as a non-repayable grant. The interim financial aid can be applied for in June, July and August 2020. The account balance from the day before the application is submitted is decisive. For example, if you still have 200 euros in your account, you can receive 300 euros as a bridging allowance for the month in which your application is submitted.
The interim financial aid can be applied for from Tuesday, 16 June 2020, at 12 am in a standardised online tool that is accessible nationwide: www.ueberbrueckungshilfe-studierende.de
Payments from 25 June 2020
The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has made 100 million euros available for this purpose. Via the portal, the students' applications are automatically forwarded to the student union responsible for them. The applications will be processed and paid out by the 57 student unions organised in the German National Association for Student Affairs from 25 June 2020.
»We are more than aware that many students are in acute need of financial help and have been expecting it earlier. But it is an ambitious project. Within a few weeks, we had to develop a completely new online-based funding procedure for the nationwide interim financial aid. It is important to us that the students can now apply for help for June. Since we still have to program the online portal at the same time, payments can presumably only be made from 25 June 2020.«Achim Meyer auf der Heyde, Secretary General of the German National Association for Student Affairs
In addition, since May 2020 until the end of March 2021 there is the possibility to take out an interest-free student loan from the Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW). Since 1 June, this has also been possible for international students who have been in Germany for less than three years.
The most important questions about the interim financial aid are answered on the website of the German National Association for Student Affairs.
The BMBF has set up a hotline under the number 0049 800 26 23 003 specifically for the interim financial aid. The Ministry can be reached via e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org.
